Sometimes when I work on a computer problem I think "I have so much to learn, there is so much out there that I still have to discover", and it's a bit like thinking about the size of the universe: there's this feeling that I'll never be able to see and know it all.
It's part of why I find computers fascinating, despite the fact that most of them are shit.
tfw 100 hours overtime over the past 5 weeks to hit a customer delivery and then it's cancelled 2 days before deadline.
T-Shirt idea: 'the revolution will not be based on node.js'
A wise person recently said: "The goal of many things is to suck less than the alternative."
If hyper threading and all these other glaring security holes, esp for virtualized environments, were known back when SPARC and other ISAs weren't dead yet...do you think they'd have still died out?
Seems like all the x86 speed gains touted as a reason for Intel superiority over competing ISAs turns out to be complete BS
Can we get SPARC back?

@_xhr_ Here's the commit message for that, marc.info's a little slow today: https://www.mail-archive.com/source-changes@openbsd.org/msg99141.html
A very short tale about a pole display and an Open Source operating system. https://jpmens.net/2018/06/19/on-a-pos-pole-display-and-an-open-source-os/ #openbsd
i just got a card jacked by a skimmer at a local gas station, and when i dialed the fraud prevention number i got put on hold for 5 minutes and then it was a _robot voice complete with fake throat clearing noises_ and i didn't twig that it was failing the turing test until it berated me to read the full name on my card instead of responding to what i'd said and then condescendingly told me "that's better".
the actual cyberpunk dystopia is so fucking lame.

My Glowriter, a glow-in-the-dark scrolling message board, will be on display at the 9th annual NYC Resistor Interactive Show tonight. Come see it and lots of other fun projects!
@akpoff
Oh, and another thing: If it is so hard to fix that you need a half year embargo to fix it, and then fail at fixing it, maybe you should cut your losses and go full disclosure so that your customers can decide if they want to take the risk or maybe switch vendors.
@florian @mwlucas I thought I had said enough at the time to counter the voices that claimed I broke an embargo with #KRACK.
I am very disappointed that this myth is still being upheld. For me this stretches beyond #OpenBSD because this myth can damage my reputation as an independent open source consultant ☹️ I realize these people probably have no intention to damage me personally but that is what they are doing by spreading lies about what happened.
#EuroBSDCon presentation deadline is coming up on Sunday! Do you do cool stuff with #OpenBSD, #FreeBSD, #NetBSD (or any #BSD)? PS, yes you do. You should submit an abstract for a 45 minute presentation, and give a talk.
Travel, hotel, and entry will be covered for selected speakers!
#OpenBSD intuition regarding a new side-channel caused by the speculative execution on systems with lazy FPU context switching wasn't unsubstantiated. Intel has just published an avdisory: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/security-center/advisory/intel-sa-00145.html
