hi im helping out Archive Team right now, by running 21 machines on 21 different public IPv4 addresses, archiving 500px. because they were assholes and started pulling all the creative commons images because capitalism.

help out, maybe? every single person archiving, with even a single computer, helps. it barely uses any disk space. if you can install virtualbox, you can help.

One overlooked point with maintaining your own GitLab instance is the maintenance effort.

There are monthly major releases and apart from those security and minor ones.

Configuration changes happen fairly frequently. Maintaining GitLab requires more time than maintaining Mastodon for example.

We need non-profits that run infrastructure and provide (ethical) services.

The github purchase by MS is bad not because of MS inherently but because it’s a big player in a lot of spaces not a neutral, independent third party providing a standalone service.
