Outsourcing road repairs to the lowest bidder isn't working in Michigan.

If we privatized the roads, the owner would extract all value from them and sell to some other company who would extract further value.

Increasingly convinced that the only entity that has real long-term interest in roads is the state, and that we should insource road construction with a focus on long-term durability.

@zigg Nope. I even waited to post this for a time when I wasn't actively pissed at the roads.

That took a while, let me tell you...

@mwlucas The reason why the states each took control of road-building in the first place was because of the abysmal conditions of the privately-owned-and-maintained auto trails, and before that the turnpikes that existed before the automobile.

Sounds like Michigan's politicians want to back to the 18th and 19th centuries. They certainly didn't learn their history.

@ND3JR @mwlucas US and UK politicians who want to go back to the 18th and 19th centuries are typically amongst the wealthy and know perfectly well what history teaches: in such circumstances the wealthy are disproportionately better off.

@mwlucas there are many good reasons why you do not want the private sector to handle commodities. Will they ever learn? I guess not, they just want their friends to make even more money at the expense of everyone.

Just like, you know, something not that important called healthcare.

@mwlucas it also helps to say "people" instead of "state". It's how it's supposed to be after all.
