A new distribution, , has just been released. Looking at 1.0 release notes[*], the project seems to aim at being a modern amd64 general-purpose system, importing part of / 's userland, while dropping maintainership of legacy and obsolete code

@sehnsucht That's exciting. A progressive Ilumos distribution? sign me up. Downloading now.

@klaatu another very good and pretty much underrated distro is Italian Desktop: sonicle.com/xstreamos/?lang=en, featuring a desktop. And then obviously there's fabolous Peter Tribble's , which still supports SPARC64 and i586, as well as root on UFS, a new packaging system -zap overlays- and LX-branded zones: tribblix.org/about.html

@sehnsucht I had trouble with TribbleX. I emailed Peter but never heard back and eventually moved on.

I'd not heard of xstreamos. Maybe I'll try it.

I'm running OpenIndiana on my expansion bay drive of my laptop now but if unleashed or xstreamos impresses me in a VM, I may rotate OI out to one of them.

@klaatu That's really unfortunate; personally I run Tribblix with CDE on a 2000 Pentium4 and on UltraSPARC III, and love it, but I agree on the fact Tribble is quite tge curious guy and he's often hard to get in contact with outside, probably, Twitter, and openindiana-discuss mailing lists, which are the only places he seems to check out daily. Anyway, glad to have found an Illumos mate =P! what DE/WM do you use?
by the way, still hoping for native ZFS encryption on OI

@sehnsucht I mostly run Fluxbox on OI.

What I'd really like is robust filesystem support. All my USB drives are EXT and JFS, and I'd like it if my Ilumos boxen fit into my workflow better. Right now I basically use my NetBSD Pi as my network drive, which I guess is an OK workaround.

@klaatu I completely agree with you, I suffer from the same problem. I run a fluxbox/fvwm2 desktop too on OI; by the way, NetBSD Rpi3 firewall/router user too here
