I've never trusted running npm with sudo. Instead, I created a special directory in my home dir "~/.nodejs" (for example), then cd into it and "npm install" the thing I need to install "globally". I have an entry in PATH that points to "~/.nodejs/node_modules/.bin" and can run all the stuff you're supposed to install globally (grunt, mocha, bunyan, etc)

This approach has worked well for me for a few years now.

So I stumbled across this WiFi captive portal the other day barfing it's php source AND root DB password (redacted)!
